ROBBINS DIAMONDS

Jerry Robbins wanted beauty, brilliance and affordability in his 5,000 sq. ft. superstore. Ruth Mellergaard used a repeated curve and circle to define the space and ensure that the jewelry remained the focus.

Light is used as a play on the diamond’s facets; 45 showcases are grouped in ovals while five large curved selling circles provide privacy for engagement sales. A ceiling treatment inspired by free-floating kites is made of hanging stretched fabric. It’s whimsical and inspired.

“Careful planning to enclose portions of the space kept the scale of the jewelry in line with the store,” explain Mellergaard.

“I used a neutral colour palette, with one purple accent wall and another terracotta one in the kids’ room as a backdrop for all the design elements: technology, artwork and sparkling colour-changing LED lights.”
